This inspiring story has been circulating lately and it’s amazing! Two years ago, Chris Huerta was not in the best physical condition and feeling down (tired of being overweight, friend’s recent suicide, someone close to him jailed), he decided that he needed to make a change. Chris accredits his success to changing his mindset and taking his health and progress slowly, one step at a time, based on the work ethic and mindset of recently retired basketball star Kobe Bryant.
Chris took to heart the process that Kobe used to rehab from his Achilles injury in 2013. In the SBNation article linked at the beginning of this post, Chris notes that he looked at his weight loss plan the same way Kobe recovered from his Achilles injury. Especially at age 35 for Kobe, making a full recovery and playing in the NBA again was bleak. The recovery process for an Achilles injury in athletes can be overwhelming, so Kobe employed a determined mindset to work hard to return to playing basketball. Chris, in a similar fashion, started slow, in small manageable increments: 10 minutes of cardio, another 10 minutes of exercises, and some stretching. Then he worked and worked to build on that everyday, increasing the duration of his exercises. In two short years, with help from his friends on diet and exercise, he has lost 170 pounds! What an incredible transformation!
Control what you can control today. I’ll build on that the next day. I’ll work at it and work at it until I get to where I want to go
Chris’ story is so inspiring and I am encouraged by his strong determination. It’s so true that we can look at a goal we want to achieve, be it weight loss, strength training, or recovering from an injury, and it may seem like it is so far away, so difficult to achieve. But as Chris has shown, all you need is a little of encouragement, a little bit of guidance, and a lot of hard work, you can definitely do it. Chris did it, and I know you can too.
